How I Got Started Quilting
My love for quilting started in the winter of 2012. Never having touched a sewing machine before, I wanted to do something special with my baby girl’s receiving blankets. I quickly went to the Internet for some guidance and found myself overwhelmed by options. The one that spoke to me the most was quilting. While I was not fortunate enough to have any close relatives that were quilters to teach me the ropes, I was very fortunate that I’ve always been a creative person with a drive to learn new things. I love working with patterns and colors, and exploring my artistic side. Suddenly, it clicked for me. I was going to teach myself to quilt and my first project was going to be a rag quilt.
During this time, my father passed away. Sewing and quilting became my outlet, my escape, and at times my therapist. I would sit down at the sewing machine with a bottle of Ale-8, a local beverage, and just sew. Sewing helped to clear my head and allowed me to focus on things other than his passing. I poured my heart and countless hours into working on things and over time I was able to hone my craft.
As the old phrase goes, I picked it up and never put it back down. I continue to learn and grow, and greatly enjoy being able to express my creativity and skills in pieces of work that others can enjoy for generations. Like any artistic heart, I take my queues from your special project. I try to incorporate as much of your personality & style into the project as possible, while giving each piece of work my own touches of love.
